The lid comes apart even further, my spring was broken so am asking for a replacement. It’s worth going the extra mile because you can clean and re- grease everything before reassembling. Also a caution not to be too gung- ho with the soldering iron or you’ll pop it through the top of the lid surround!

A replacement unit would cost about £32 and comes with a ten year guarantee, taking in two tubes of sealant you can save £27 doing this yourself if you have a whole day to spare. Cutting the glass open is extremely dangerous often leading to slashing your opposite arm holding the glass which is why glass companies not longer offer this service.

Lawsuit warning! Sell your home without disclosing these kind of improvements, you are very liable. Per U.S. building code (your responsibility as the homeowner). Each pane shall bear the manufacturer's mark designating the type and thickness of the glass or glazing material. The identification shall not be omitted unless approved and an affidavit is furnished by the glazing contractor certifying that each light is glazed in accordance with approved construction documents that comply with the provisions of this chapter. Safety glazing shall be identified in accordance with Section 2406.3. Most Regulations suck but some do save lives. Many people died for us to live care free and oblivious of the dangers that surround us everyday. If someone got hurt by this window they will seriously take everything you own, and a % of everything you make in the future. The victim, glass manufacturer, your city/state/federal building code, your own homeowners insurance would sue. Lawyers would have a field day.
